Light Source
Cast Shadow

Finding a light source
will help you ground your
object.
Highlight

Your highlight is white. Objects that are considered white
such as an egg will be a value not true white but a light gray.
Without a light source, the object will
be flat. The cast shadow creates the
illusion that the object is not floating
on canvas. The highlight is created
in the direction of the light source.
Although there are multiple light
sources, when creating still life, it is
helpful to use one.
Nothing more frightening
than staring at a blank
canvas, with  large brush
work a neutral color or gray
value over the entire area will
help you start blocking in
your images.

Every art class starts with
simple objects on a table.
Sounds boring but it's back
to basics. Shape,
composition, value and color,
creating any artwork, are your
best tools.
